What is the Best Four-Season Fifth Wheel?

Cold Weather 5th Wheel

While there are many great four-season fifth wheels on the market today, there are a few that really stand out from the crowd that offers superior four-season capabilities.

Below are our top five picks for the best four-season fifth wheels on the market today in no particular order.

  1. Forest River Arctic Wolfe – While not the most capable four-season fifth wheel on the market today.  The Forest River Arctic Wolfe earns a spot on this list due to its affordable price costing less than half of what more expensive four-season fifth wheels do, while still providing complete four-season capability.
  2. Northwood Arctic Fox Grande Ronde – Northwood carries a wide range of four-season travel trailers and truck campers but where they really shine is their line of all-season fifth wheels which they refer to as their Arctic Fox Grande Ronde.
  3. Grand Design Solitude – While Grand Design might be somewhat new in the RV scene, they make some great all-season fifth wheels, capable of four-season and winter camping thanks to their Weather-Tek™ package, which offers a wide range of four-season features.
  4. Forest River Riverstone – It’s hard not to include Forest River on this list twice as they make such a wide variety of four-season 5th wheels.  But one of their best lines of four-season 5th wheels is the Riverstone collection which provides a superior level of four-season capability as well as 11 different floorplans to choose from.
  5. DRV Luxury Suites Mobile Suites – A name synonymous in the RV industry for luxurious four-season fifth wheels is DRV, which has been turning out high-quality all-season RVs since 2003.

What RV Features Do You Need for Cold Weather Camping?

5th Wheel Illustration

If you’ve come to this article, you probably already know that you can’t just use any RV for cold-weather or winter camping.

As most budget-friendly RVs have very little insulation and no cold weather protection for holding tanks or waterlines.

Which means that if the temperature drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit while camping, the pipes, water connections, and potentially the holding tanks could burst or rupture leading to costly repairs.

So it’s essential when shopping for a fifth wheel that you know what features you need for cold-weather camping if you plan on doing any cold-weather or winter camping at all.

Must-Have 5th Wheel Features for Cold Weather Camping

  • Four-Season Rating – The first thing an RV needs is a four-season rating but be aware that different RV manufacturers will often refer to this four-season rating by different names such as a Weather Tek™ Package, all-weather package, or extreme weather package.
  • Sealed and Heated Underbelly – Beyond the four-season rating the next most crucial thing an RV must-have for cold weather camping is a completely sealed and heated underbelly in order to make sure the water lines and holding tanks don’t freeze.
  • Adequate Insulation – Since most RVs are only three-season campers intended only for fair-weather camping, they typically have very little insulation or R-value, which measures how well a material resists the flow of heat.  So when looking for an all-season camper make sure you have at least an R-10 in the walls and ideally either an R-40 or R-45 for the floor and roof.
  • Powerful Furnace – While needed furnace size can vary depending on the size of the RV, it’s important to remember that the furnace is your main line of defense from the cold weather, and because of this you ideally want to have a furnace rated at 30,000 BTU or higher.
  • Heated Tank Pads – While not absolutely necessary, heated tank pads are a nice add-on feature to help keep the tanks from freezing in extremely cold weather.
