Can a Half-Ton Truck Pull a Toy Hauler?

Dodge RAM 1500

Half-ton trucks, including the Ford F-150 and the RAM 1500 are some of the most popular vehicles on the road today, thanks to their excellent versatility and large towing capacities.

As half-ton trucks can typically pull between 5,000 and 10,000 pounds, allowing them to pull a wide variety of travel trailers including toy haulers

However, it’s important to keep in mind that not all half-ton trucks are created equal when it comes to towing capacity.

As there can be as much as a 5,000-pound difference in towing capability from one half-ton truck to the next, depending on the make and model as well as its trim level.

As you can see in the below table, which shows the various towing capacities of the most popular half-ton trucks.

Make/ModelMax Tow Capacity
Ford F-1505,000 – 11,300 lbs
Chevrolet Silverado 15008,900 – 9,700 lbs
Toyota Tundra8,800 – 10,200 lbs
GMC Sierra 15008,800 – 9,600 lbs
RAM 15006,150 – 8,290 lbs

So before towing any toy hauler with a half-ton truck, it’s important to know what the maximum tow capacity of the truck is.

To ensure that the fully loaded weight of the toy hauler is below the truck’s max tow capacity.

While keeping in mind the 80 Rule for Towing, which states that you should never exceed 80 percent of the max tow capacity of the tow vehicle.

What is the Lightest Weight 5th Wheel Toy Hauler?

The lightest 5th-wheel toy hauler is the Forest River Cherokee 255RR, which has a dry weight of 6,844 pounds and an overall length of 32 feet 7 inches.

However, it’s important to remember that the dry weight of a camper only reflects what the camper weighs completely empty.

So if you’re trying to decide whether or not your truck can pull the lightest 5th-wheel toy hauler.

You need to account for all the extra weight that will be loaded into the camper, which in the case of the lightest 5th-wheel toy hauler can be as much as 4,771 pounds.

As the Forest River Cherokee 255RR has a cargo-carrying or payload capacity of 4,771 pounds.

This means the lightest 5th wheel toy hauler can weigh as much as 11,615 pounds when fully loaded, which is the gross vehicle weight rating for the fifth wheel.

What is the Average Weight of a Toy Hauler?

Unloaded toy haulers can weigh as little as 1,500 pounds or as much as 15,000 pounds, depending on the size and length of the toy hauler.

But in general, most toy haulers will weigh between 3,500 and 11,000 pounds unloaded.

It’s important to account for payload capacity though when trying to determine the true weight of a toy hauler, as most toy haulers will have a cargo-carrying or payload capacity between 2,500 and 4,500 pounds.

This means a fully loaded toy hauler will typically weigh between 6,000 and 15,000 pounds, with an average weight of 10,500 pounds.
