How Tall is a 5th Wheel Toy Hauler?
5th wheel toy haulers are the tallest toy haulers available, ranging in height from 12 feet 10 inches to 13 feet 6 inches, with an average height of 13 feet 2 inches.
Which allows 5th wheel toy haulers to provide the most open and spacious garage areas.
As most 5th wheel toy haulers have interior ceiling heights that range from 8 feet to 8 ½ feet tall.
Allowing you to haul the largest of toys and gear, up to and including a full-size car in some cases.
Average Width of a Toy Hauler
As is the case with toy hauler height, the width of a toy hauler can vary, albeit not as much.
As toy hauler width usually doesn’t vary more than a few feet from the smallest of toy haulers to the largest.
With small compact toy haulers, having widths ranging from 6 to 7 ½ feet wide, and large toy haulers, having widths ranging from 8 to 8½ feet wide.
How is RV Height Measured?
If we’re going to be discussing the average height of a toy hauler, it’s probably important that we talk briefly about how to measure the height of an RV in the first place.
As it’s important to measure the height of an RV properly in order to end up with the most accurate number possible.
Because when it comes to traveling with an RV and clearances, sometimes a few inches can make all the difference in the world.
And be the difference between clearing a low bridge or hitting it.
How to Accurately Measure RV Height
- Make sure the RV is parked on a completely flat and level surface.
- Measure from the roof of the RV to the ground.
- Then get on top of the RV and measure any items that stick up past the roofline such as ACs, vents, or roof racks.
- Then add the height of the RV and the tallest item on the roof, to get the true height of the RV.
What is the Maximum Height of an RV?
While there is no federal limit on the maximum height of an RV, many states do have height restrictions for both commercial vehicles such as semi-trucks and no commercial vehicles such as RVs.
For example, Eastern states in the US generally have vehicle height restrictions of 13½ feet, while Western states usually have vehicle height restrictions of 14 feet.
Because of this RV manufacturers will usually never exceed 13½ feet tall, in order to ensure they stay under the maximum height limit for all states across the US.
Which means the tallest RVs on the market today will usually either be 13 feet 5 inches or 13 feet 6 inches tall.
What Not to Do While Towing a Large RV!
However, if you happen to be driving one of these super tall RVs, such as a large luxury 5th wheel toy hauler or a large Class A motorhome, don’t assume that you’re in the clear when it comes to clearances, just because the RV is under 13½ feet tall.
As there are many overpasses and bridges throughout the US, especially when you get into more rural areas, that have much lower clearance heights than 13½ feet.
Which is why it’s so critical when driving a tall RV or any RV for that matter, to know your specific RV height and to be mindful of low clearance signs and posted clearance heights.
In order to avoid hitting any low-hanging overhead obstructions.
In addition, it’s also a good idea to map your route out ahead of time, when driving a large RV to help avoid any potential low clearance points.
And one of the best ways to do this is by using an RV-specific GPS unit, such as the popular Garmin RV 890 GPS Navigator, which helps you choose an RV-safe route that lets you avoid low clearances, tight turns, steep grades, and more.
