Have you ever wondered if those tiny Class B RVs you see on the road have bathrooms inside?
When I was new to the RV lifestyle, I certainly did.
I wondered how it could be possible to fit a bathroom inside a motorhome that typically only ranges from about 16 to 24 feet in length, making them not much longer than a minivan or a full-size truck.
Surprisingly though, most Class B RVs do come equipped with a basic bathroom, often in the form of a wet bath with a combined shower and toilet.
However, the size and amenities of Class B bathrooms can vary greatly depending on the make and model.
So to gain a better understanding, let’s explore what bathroom features to expect in a Class B motorhome and take a look at some of the most popular models that offer one.
Do Class B RVs Have Bathrooms?
The short answer is yes. Most Class B motorhomes do come equipped with a small bathroom including a toilet, shower, and sometimes a small fold-down sink.
However, the limited interior space in a Class B RV severely limits how spacious or amenity-packed these bathrooms can be.
Class B RV bathrooms often take the form of a wet bath, which means the entire bathroom space can get wet.
This clever design allows for the full functionality of a bathroom in a compact space.
The toilet is typically placed in the shower area, and waterproof fixtures and a floor drain ensure that the entire room can handle moisture.
These baths are usually outfitted with a shower curtain or a waterproof door to prevent water from splashing into the rest of the RV during use.
This setup is highly efficient for travelers who want the convenience of an onboard bathroom without sacrificing valuable living space in a small motorhome.
Space constraints, however, mean usage and storage in these bathrooms are extremely limited.
But the essentials are generally always there, including:
- Shower Stall and Shower Head
- RV or Cassette Toilet
- Small Sink, Often with a Shower Wand/hose Attachment
- Storage Cubbies or Mesh Bags
- Small Mirror, Light Fixture, and Compact Exhaust Fan
Toilet Options
Class B RV bathrooms typically use compact toilets designed for recreational vehicles.
This is because full residential toilets are too large and require too much water to be practical onboard a motorhome, even on larger RVs, like Class A and Class C motorhomes.
Below are some of the most common Class B RV toilet options:
- Basic Foot-Flush RV Toilet – The simplest choice is a basic RV foot-flush toilet made from either plastic or porcelain. These standard RV toilets typically only use between one and two quarts per flush and take up minimal space, yet work similarly to a household toilet. Using the RV’s fresh water supply and black water tank to function.
- Cassette Toilet – Cassette toilets have removable waste tanks that slide out like a drawer for dumping in any standard toilet. This avoids needing water and plumbing to flush. Cassette toilets take up slightly more interior room but save space since no black water tank is needed.
- Composting Toilet – Typically found on DIY camper van conversions, composting toilets are completely waterless and self-contained, composting toilets slowly turn solid waste in an internal drying process with an electric fan that circulates fresh air. Composting toilets conserve water and allow free, legal dumping of compost materials. However, they do require more effort in emptying and cleaning.
- Portable Toilet – The most basic Class B bathrooms may only offer a portable camping toilet or porta potty. These compact units have removable wastewater tanks for easy and sanitary dumping. They take up very little space and can slide away out of sight. But you’ll have to depend on campground facilities for flushing and water needs.
Sink Options
Class B RV bathrooms utilize small space-saving sinks.
Below are some of the most popular types of sinks found in Class B motorhomes and camper van bathrooms:
- Single Basic Sink – The simplest option is a single circle or rectangular sink custom fit into the narrow wet bath space. It may sit atop a small cabinet for bathroom storage. Water is either supplied by an electric pump or a standard RV on-demand water pump.
- Fold-Down Sink – To save space when not in use, some Class B’s feature a sink that folds flush against the wall. It drops down to create a sink basin and mini counter space when needed. A fold-down sink works nicely for its duality, stowing away to allow more freedom of movement the rest of the time.
- Foot Pump Sink – Typically found in camper van conversions, foot pump sinks allow the placement of a sink in areas without easy access to plumbing. Foot pump sinks are a great low-tech option that uses very little water, but they can be a pain to use and refill.
- No Bathroom Sink – In the smallest, stripped-down Class B camper vans, you may find no bathroom sink at all. In these cases, the kitchen sink in the motorhome is intended to act as both the kitchen sink as well as the bathroom sink.
Shower Options
Showering comfortably in a tiny RV bathroom requires some creative solutions.
Most Class B motorhomes have at minimum a basic shower stall with a wand or sprayer, but options vary widely when it comes to privacy, convenience, and usable showering space.
- Shower Stall – Shower stalls in Class B bathrooms are typically very compact and offer very limited head height and floor space. They also often serve dual purposes, acting as storage or a drying area for towels or bathing suits while not being used as a shower.
- Handheld Shower Head – Most Class B showers utilize a handheld shower head that serves as both the shower head and bathroom faucet. It offers flexibility for rinsing or washing within the wet bath space using a shower curtain for splash protection. Handheld units range from basic to deluxe models with on/off buttons, water-saving features, and adjustable holders.
- Outdoor Shower – For unlimited showering space, some Class B RVs offer outdoor showers. Quick connect hoses allow attaching shower wands when parked. Outdoor showers offer more comfort and elbow room by taking showering outside when possible.
