One of the biggest advantages of the Class B RV is how small and nimble they are. Allowing you to camp in some amazing off-grid camp spots, that wouldn't be possible in a larger Class C or Class A motorhome. But that small and nimble size can also be a hindrance when it comes to the RV's ability to boondock and dry camp. As the smaller size of the typical Class B RV doesn't provide a lot of space for boondocking friendly features such as large freshwater storage tanks for potable water, solar panels for off-grid power, and ample storage space for extra supplies and food. However, there are a handful of Class B RVs that really stand out from the crowd, when it comes to their ability to boondock and dry camp for extended periods of time, which we have highlighted below. 1. Winnebago Revel 44E Quick Specs Price: Starting at $185,838 Chassis: Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Sleeping Capacity: 2 Length: 19 Feet 7 Inches Gross Vehicle Weight: 9,050 Pounds Bathroom: Wet Bath One of the most well-equipped Class B RVs for boondocking and off-grid camping without a doubt is the Winnebago Revel 44E, thanks to its numerous boondocking and off-road features. First released by Winnebago in 2017, this capable premium off-grid campervan quickly became the Class B RV of choice for outdoor adventurers and sports enthusiasts with means. Thanks to its standard on-demand four-wheel-drive, premium Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis, and large gear garage thanks to its unique power lift bed at the rear. But all of these off-road and rugged premium features don't come cheap, as the Winnebago Revel is one of the most expensive Class B RVs on the market today. Why It's Great For Boondocking The Winnebago Revel is loaded with boondocking-friendly features that not only allow you to off-grid and dry camp but allow you to do so for extended periods of time, thanks to the below, standard boondocking features. Two 125-amp-hour lithium-ion batteries, which can be charged either from the dual roof-mounted solar panels or from the dedicated second alternator. 2,000-Watt inverter/charger for off-grid power. A 21-gallon freshwater tank that provides several days' worth of potable water. On-demand water pump for reliable water pressure even when you're not connected to city water. 21-gallon insulated and heated grey water tank. 5-gallon cassette toilet that allows you to dump your black waste in any restroom, eliminating the need for an RV dump station, which can be hard to find in remote areas. Hydronic Heating System, which provides comfortable and quiet heating no matter where you choose to camp. Rugged interior with easy-to-maintain surfaces, and heavy-duty vinyl flooring, that can handle whatever mother nature may throw at it. Often some of the best Class B RVs for boondocking and dry camping are made by van conversion companies such as Off Grid Adventure Vans, Sportsmobile, and Vandoit Adventure Vans. Which offer standard and customizable conversion kits for work vans such as the RAM Promaster, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and Ford Transit. And one of the best examples of this is "The Rambler" which is made by the van conversion company Off Grid Adventure Vans that's based out of Maryland and produces a wide variety of van conversion kits for the 159" RAM Promaster. Why It's Great for Boondocking Off Grid Adventure Vans or OGAVans for short offers four standard layouts of their van conversion kit but no matter which version you choose they all come well equipped for boondocking and off-grid camping, thanks to the below built-in features. Winnebago Solis 59PX Quick Specs Price: $82,000 Chassis: RAM Promaster Sleeping Capacity: 4 Length: 19 Feet 9 Inches or 21 Feet (Depending on Model) Gross Vehicle Weight: 8,900 Pounds or 9,350 Pounds (Depending on Model) Bathroom: Wet Bath One of the cheapest Class B RVs you can buy that's still great for boondocking is the Winnebago Solis 59PX which has an average price of $82,000. Which might not seem that cheap at first glance but when you consider the fact that the starting price of the Winnebago Revel is $100,000 more expensive, $82,000 for a Winnebago Solis doesn't seem so bad. But despite the more affordable price of the Solis it still offers loads of features great for boondocking and is one of the few Class B RVs on this list that can actually sleep 4 campers at a time. Why It's Great for Boondocking Below are just some of the features that make the Winnebago Solis so great for boondocking and dry camping. Premium floor-to-ceiling insulation and zippered air barrier window coverings help to regulate interior air temperature and conserve energy while boondocking. Sportsmobile offers a wide variety of van conversions at all different price points on pretty much every van available today including the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ford Transit, RAM Promaster, Chevy Express, and Ford E Vans. But one of the best things about Sportsmobile and where they differ from other van conversion companies is they will actually supply the van as well from their network of preferred dealers. Providing a one-stop-shop for not only the boondocking friendly van conversion but also the van as well. Thor actually makes three different versions of their Sequence model including the 20K, the 20A, and the 20L, which we have featured here. But no matter which particular model you happen to choose, all three are great for boondocking. We chose to highlight the 20L model of the Sequence though, as this is one of the most common as well as versatile Class B RV floorplans out there. Thanks to its dual opposing bench seats for sleeping, well-equipped kitchenette, swivel caption chairs for seating, and rear wet bath. Why It's Great for Boondocking Despite its more affordable price, the Thor Sequence 20L is loaded with boondocking-friendly features for off-grid and dry camping, which we have highlighted below. Two AGM house batteries with a 1,000-watt inverter for plenty of off-grid power. (Optional Lithium-Ion Batteries) Solar charge controller with a roof-mounted 190-watt solar panel to help keep those batteries topped off even while boondocking. Built on the popular RAM Promaster chassis, this Class B RV is great for families that want to be able to boondock in a smaller and more compact campervan. As this Class B RV from Pleasure-Way is one of the few Class B RVs that actually has a 4 person sleeping capacity, thanks to its unique pop-top sleeping loft. Why It's Great for Boondocking The Tofino offers a minimalist campervan design by providing all the boondocking features that you really need and nothing you don't, which helps to keep things nice and simple while boondocking. Dual 100 amp-hour lithium coach batteries with a Xantrex™ 2,000 watt pure-sine wave inverter and an 80-amp lithium charger provide plenty of off-grid power for all your electrical needs. Vandoit offers two main van conversion packages including the DO Package and the LIV Package. With the DO Package providing a more minimalist and modular design while the LIV Package provides a more comfortable and feature-rich design. But the commonality that both the DO and LIV packages share is their excellent boondocking capabilities. Why It's Great for Boondocking Vandoit vans are specifically built for adventurers and explorers and designed specifically for off-grid and dry camping. So it probably comes as no surprise that they are loaded with off-grid and boondocking features for dry camping, which we have listed below. Equipped with a hydraulic bed that raises up when not in use to provide a huge gear garage at the back of the van for all your outdoor adventure and storage needs. Moisture and mold-resistant ceiling and floor insulation to help regulate the temperature inside the van. Optional AGM 300 amp-hour deep cycle battery system or 400 amp-hour lithium-ion battery system provides plenty of power while camping off-grid. 3-in-1 2,000-watt inverter charger control system charges and converts DC to AC power when not connected to shore power. ModVans CV1 Quick Specs Price: $53,639 (Conversion Only) $95,764 to $101,169 (Van + Conversion) Chassis: Ford Transit Sleeping Capacity: 4 Length: 19 Feet 11 Inches Gross Vehicle Weight: 8,670 Pounds (Transit 150) Bathroom: Toilet Only One of the most unique boondocking Class B RVs on this list has to be the ModVans CV1, which is built using either the low roof Ford Transit 150 or 250 chassis and features a full-length powered pop-top. Which allows ModVans to provides a very stealth and low profile van while in travel mode as well as a full-height Class B RV once in camp mode all rolled into one convenient package. And if that wasn't enough, this Class B RV from ModVans actually has a 4 person sleeping capacity thanks to the upper sleeping loft in the powered pop-top. Why It's Great for Boondocking Like Vandoit van conversions, ModVans van conversions are designed to be very minimalist and modular, allowing you to customize the van to your particular boondocking needs. However, all ModVans CV1's provide the below boondocking features. A lower roof provides a lower center of gravity and less top-heavy design compared to high roof vans, which makes off-roading much easier and more manageable. Optional 4x4 conversion or Ford Transit all-wheel-drive package for even better off-road capability to reach those harder to reach and more remote boondocking campsites. As Winnebago designed the EKKO from the ground up to be one of the best off-grid and boondocking capable RVs on the road today. However, one of the first things you probably noticed about the EKKO was how big it is, as it's quite a bit bigger than the standard Class B RV. And that's because the EKKO is actually a Class B+ RV, which has a cutaway body similar to a Class C RV for more interior space. Why It's Great for Boondocking The Winnebago EKKO was designed from the ground up to be the ultimate boondocking RV, which means the EKKO has just about every boondocking feature imaginable. However, we've highlighted some of the more important and main boondocking features below that the Winnebago EKKO 22A offers. A heated pass-through rear garage provides plenty of storage space for all your outdoor gear and supplies. Built on the all-wheel-drive Ford Transit chassis with a 310 horsepower V6 engine that provides plenty of off-road capabilities and power to reach those harder-to-reach and more isolated boondocking spots. Has 455-watts of roof-mounted solar panels for best-in-class solar power, allowing you to fully power the EKKO from just the sun. Dedicated second alternator to charge the lithium-ion batteries while driving on those cloudy days. A massive 50-gallon freshwater tank allows you to boondock for extended periods of time without running out of water. Coachmen Cross Trek 21XG Quick Specs Price: $78,000 Chassis: Ford Transit Sleeping Capacity: 4 Length: 24 Feet 1 Inch Gross Vehicle Weight: 11,000 Pounds Bathroom: Dry Bath The largest Class B boondocking RV on this list is the Coachmen Cross Trek 21XG. Which like the Class B from above is a Class B+ that has a cutaway body on a van chassis for additional interior space and greater length. This is personally one of my favorite Class B+ RVs on the market today because of all the comfort and amenities that it offers. Making it a great choice for anyone that plans to do a lot of camping and boondocking, for an extended period of time. As this Class B+ offers most of the amenities that you would find in a standard home. As the Cross Trek 21XG has a full three-piece dry bath, a murphy double bed, a large u-shaped dinette that converts into an additional sleeping space, and a full kitchen. But my favorite feature on this Class B+ has to be the large rear storage garage inside the camper, thanks to its flip-up murphy bed and large rear hatch. Why It's Great for Boondocking The Coachmen Cross Trek offers a variety of features that allow this RV to dry camp and boondock for extended periods of time, which we have listed below. Has the largest battery capacity in its class and an advanced electrical system that provides plenty of power while camping off-grid that can even run the air conditioner. Equipped with an extra-large 3,000-watt inverter to provide power to all your AC appliances and electronics even while camping off-grid. Optional Solar Package Has the best in class and largest freshwater tank (41-gallon), LP tank, and cargo carrying capacity allowing you to boondock and dry camp for extended periods of time. Equipped with a 14-foot power awning to provide plenty of shade to help keep you cool. Equipped with Azdel composite vacuum bonded sidewalls to help regulate temperature while dry camping.
